Growing Home

It was something of a disappointment to realise - when we recovered from the shock of moving in such uncertain times - that we had bought a house with a garden that was quite featureless at the back, and a hedge clipper's dream at the front. This blog will document the transition, of the rear garden at least, into a beautiful cottage garden, lovely to look at and delightful to smell. I hope. It's been several years since I had my hands in the soil so I'm having to retrieve the knowledge as I go along.

I've never been a fan of the 'neat and tidy', so two identical lawns with shallow borders for bedding plants, bulbs and neatly clipped shrubs did nothing to excite. I don't like gardens that look hoovered. So my task is to fluff it up (for want of a better phrase) and make it pretty. Armed with a wish list of plants I trotted off to B&Qs 20% off sale and returned with a boot full of potential.

Tom, the chap who is to come once a week to do the hard work of maintenance has ideas of his own and tries to please, but I have to ensure I get in first, no multi-coloured bedding for me, or heathers or anything I don't want!

Tomorrow I shall record what it is like now ... and hopefully here by next year it will be seen to be very different.
